Scispot launches Datarooms to automate and control lab data sharing
Post by

Across the life science industry, companies are feeling the pressure to lower the cost of product development, speed up development timelines, and improve success rates. To achieve these goals, life science R&D is moving towards a distributed and virtual research model with collaboration between multidisciplinary teams in different labs and often in different organizations.

Outsourcing and lab digitalization are increasing

Among high-tech industries, the biopharmaceutical industry has the highest levels of outsourcing, with large pharmaceutical companies spending up to 40% of their R&D budget on outsourcing1. This is predicted to increase to 50% in the next few years. Outsourcing is even more important for biotech startups, which often have limited resources.

Moreover, lab digitalization and data-led research are predicted to allow faster, smarter development and drive down the cost of new product development across the life science industry2.

Life science data management is becoming more challenging

However, this new R&D model makes it difficult for labs to structure, manage, and connect data. Collaborators often share unstructured data in many different formats. Many labs struggle without the right tools to clean, structure, and integrate disparate datasets into a centralized database. Historical spreadsheet tools were not developed for life science research and do not offer regulatory compliance or automation tools. Therefore, simple spreadsheets come with a high potential for error that can lower data quality. Traditional lab information management systems (LIMS) can be customized to allow some level of automation, but this usually requires expensive and lengthy programming, taking an average of 2 years to complete.

A no-code purpose-built LIMS solution

Scispot’s Labsheets is a no-code database with a spreadsheet interface specifically designed to manage life science R&D data and evolving workflows. With Labsheets you can automate lab workflows and manage your lab resources and data, including inventory, samples, vendors, and customer accounts. You can connect legacy information management systems and hundreds of apps to create a centralized, integrated data repository. You can even combine sales, operations, and lab data to track the real-time progress of each project.

We recently launched the Datarooms extension to make Labsheets even more powerful. We created this extension based on the requests of data teams, outsourcing managers, and researchers at biotech companies and contract research organizations (CROs). We know how hard it can be to transfer data – both for biotech and pharmaceutical companies and for CROs.

Automated, controlled data sharing

With Datarooms, you can choose how the data you receive is formatted, cleaned, and structured. You can automate data structuring so all your received data is immediately readable by humans and machines. You can standardize and integrate data from many different sources. You can also control who sees which data by setting up different Datarooms for colleagues, external partners, and customers.

You can use Datarooms in a number of ways to streamline and automate your data management. For example:

1. Simplify data integration

With our user-friendly no-code interface, create database templates to receive data directly from team members, CROs, and partners in a specific format. Invite collaborators and partners to submit their raw and analyzed data. Labsheets already has built-in automated data cleansing features to ensure data quality. With Labsheets and Datarooms, you can receive all your data in one place instead of managing data in many different places.

2. Submit samples and data to CROs and service companies

CROs can use Datarooms to let partners’ researchers submit samples or data for analysis. Researchers can then receive real-time updates on the state of their samples and data.

3. Share data selectively

Companies can easily create Datarooms for different stakeholders and share their lab data and R&D data selectively. This keeps data safe and helps comply with regulatory guidelines.
